On December 17, at the ICISE Center (Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh), the Vietnam Science Association introduced and organized the 2024 Vietnam International Workshop on Microscopy Science (VWM-2024) with the participation of more than 60 scientists from 20 universities and research units at home and abroad.

Professor Tran Thanh Van, President of the Vietnam Science Association, said that the microscope is an important invention that greatly helps people in fields such as life sciences, medicine, engineering technology, nanotechnology, and materials science. In the field of life sciences, the microscope helps people observe the morphology and structure of cells and study the interactions between pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses with cells and analyze the characteristics of each molecule.

 Currently, Vietnam is applying many types of microscopes in hospitals, schools, research institutes and factories, such as: TEM microscopes , SEM microscopes , etc. However, up to now, there has been no formal training program in microscopy techniques in the country, making our ability to exploit this technology still limited.

From the above reality, the VWM-2024 Workshopn was born and will be held annually at the ICISE Center . The Workshop will invite leading microscopy scientists in the world to build a foundation and develop a microscopy research community in Vietnam. VWM-2024 will also support, provide knowledge and free training on microscopy science for excellent students selected from 15 universities and research institutes in the country.

This Workshop invited many professors, doctors and leading scientists, including 5 great scientists of Vietnamese origin working at universities such as: Nazarbayev University (Kazakhstan) , Kanazawa University (Japan) , Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) , Phenikaa University (Vietnam) , Institute 69 under the Command of the Protection of President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

Scientists will focus on presenting papers, researching and dissecting new and emerging issues in microscopy. There will be many other research papers, presentations and discussions on advanced microscopy image processing techniques, such as: fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, TEM, SEM, cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM), backscattered electron diffraction (EBSD), AFM and microscopy image processing. In addition, the parties will also discuss applications of microscopy techniques in life sciences and materials science and new advances and inventions.

Leading Vietnamese scientists around the world present new research and papers online

At the Workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Quang Huy, Head of the Organizing Committee of VWM-2024 (Phenikaa University) said that in the past 20 years, Vietnam has not organized any scientific Workshop or training courses on microscopy, which is a big disadvantage in the process of our integration and development. VWM-2024 will be an opportunity for Vietnamese microscopy scientists and the young generation to meet, exchange and share experiences about their discoveries in the fields of life sciences and materials science.

“Through this, we hope to be the starting point to form a microscopic science community for Vietnam to promote research, invention and application for the country's development,” Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Huy shared.
