EdgeMaster - Automatic cutting edge measurement in production
The EdgeMaster is an optical 3D measurement device for automatic cutting edge measurement. Edges of inserts, drills, millers and other round tools are measured regardless of type, size, material, or surface finish. Users measure radii >2µm as well as rake, wedge and clearance angle of tools. Different types, including both waterfall and trumpet, are precisely measured.
Traceable and repeatable results are delivered in high vertical resolution even at vibrations, variations in temperature and ambient light. In addition to chipping measurement, the high vertical resolution also enables traceable roughness measurement on the rake face.
Highlights of the EdgeMaster model
1.Precision – Speed – Flexibility:
The expansion to 5 axes enables the measurement of geometries that are difficult or impossible to access with contact-probe 3D CMM technology. The high-precision tilt and rotary axes allow for the measurement of profile/position parameters and roughness across the entire measuring sample.
2. Automatic measurement of wear on cutting tools
The user automatically measures flank and wear parameters according to ISO 8688 (Tool life testing in milling), such as flank wear.
3. One-button measurement solution in manufacturing
The software is designed to be maximally user-friendly and can be carried out in just a few steps without any programming knowledge.

Verification of multiple edges in a single measurement
The EdgeMasterX is part of the Bruker Alicona optical product line for high-resolution tool measurement in production and is the extended model of the EdgeMaster series. The EdgeMasterX allows users to verify multiple edges in a single measurement.
Additional functions of the EdgeMasterX:
- Measure different edge parameters at various positions on the tool.
- Measure user-defined parameters on the tools of a batch.
- When combined with the rotational sample stage, the chamfered cutting edges of the tool are also detected through a single measurement.
EdgeMasterHOB
Advanced optical measuring machine for gears
The EdgeMasterHOB is one of Alicona's optical 3D measuring machines and is the specifically adapted version within the EdgeMaster series. Like all Alicona 3D tool measuring machines, the EdgeMasterHOB is used for quality assurance with fully automated measurement. The EdgeMasterHOB model is particularly applied in areas such as regrinding centers. A working distance of 33 mm allows for easy measurement of cutting edges, even in areas that are difficult to access.
Additional functions of the EdgeMasterHOB:
- Measurement of edge chipping defects.
- Measurement of chamfers as well as edge rounding on the flank, root, and tip of the tooth.
